This weekend, we were humbled to witness something This weekend, we were humbled to witness something truly extraordinary at @everywhenartspace at Whistlewood, Shoreham - an exhibition that wasn’t just about paintings, but about deep emotional connections, history, and culture. Tjintjintjin marks the first-ever exhibition of @papunyatulaartists on the Mornington Peninsula, featuring the breathtaking works of Debra Nakamarra and Katherine Nakamarra, two of Central Australia’s most significant and highly regarded members of Papunya Tula Artists. As the sisters stood surrounded by more than 20 of their vibrant paintings, you could feel the weight of their journey. Their works bring to life the ancient site of Tjintjintjin and the ancestral creation figure, Katungka, carrying with them the stories of their mother, Walangkura Napanangka, one of Papunya Tula’s pioneering female artists, and their father, Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula. In the opening speech, Dr. John Kean reminded us of the immense significance of Papunya Tula in modern Australian art and the millennia-old cultural history that these paintings honour. These aren’t just artworks; they are echoes of the past, reflections of the land, and an unbroken connection to the ancestral world. Seeing Debra and Katherine visibly moved by the sight of their works together was a powerful moment—one that transcended the room and resonated deeply with everyone present. If you’ve ever wanted to connect with Aboriginal art in a way that touches the soul, Tjintjintjin is your opportunity. This is more than an exhibition - it’s a window into a rich cultural legacy, into stories that stretch back 17,000 years, and into the vibrant lives of these remarkable sisters.
