In celebration of the 2025 theme of NAIDOC Week – The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, Everywhen Art is presenting a solo exhibition by the Mornington Island-based artist Amanda Jane Gabori. Amanda Gabori was born in 1966 in the township of Gununa on Mornington Island. She is the youngest daughter of the famous painter, the late Sally Gabori whose works are currently featuring in a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Amanda says that she started painting with her mother about 15 years ago, as she saw how much pleasure painting brought her mother and how her mother had loved that, through her paintings she could relate the stories and landscape of her sea country and its people around the world. Amanda says she is honoured and proud to continue her mother’s legacy.

Since 2010, Amanda has exhibited in leading private galleries around Australia, as well as public galleries including Cairns Art Gallery, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and in the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.

Her main painting themes are those her mother and father’s country of Bentick Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. In her work she depicts its striking rock formations, tidal waterholes, its sweeping lands where the sky meets the sea, and the scales that cover the body of the small river cod, Dibirdibi which is her language name and her totem given to her by her father.

Rather than depicting the iconography of dreaming stories Ampilatwatja painters reinforce their strong connection to Country in landscape form and with a strong focus on the plants used for bush medicine. As the artists note, their paintings depict the country ‘on which the dreaming stories sit’.

However, these intricate paintings are far from superficial view of lands. Rather they contain the information held sacred to Alyawarr, but hidden from public view, underneath the surface.

Of special importance is the recording of flowers, leaves and seeds used by Alywarr for bush medicine. Representing this subject fulfills several purposes. Trips to collect plants for bush medicine enable knowledge of the habitat and usage of plants; documenting the plants in art enables their recording for posterity and bush medicine itself promotes well-being.

Christabel Blackman and Tracee Hutchison: In Conversation

In conversation, book signing and exhibition opening with artist, fine art conservator and author Christabel Blackman and award-winning journalist Tracee Hutchison. Christabel and Tracee will be discussing Christabel’s new book Charles & Barbara Blackman: a decade of art and love.

Highly acclaimed, Blackman’s book is not only a moving exploration of the deep love her parents shared – as evidenced by their letters – but an eloquent, perceptive and empathetic insight into the Melbourne art scene from the 1950s. Written from an insiders perspective, the book details the lives, interrelationships and extended circles of those who were to become some of Australia’s most revered artists, as they were just embarking on their careers.

Whistlewood (home of Everywhen Art) and its owners, art critic and author Alan McCulloch and actress and writer Ellen McCulloch, were part of this world – their work, lives and shared interests intertwining with those of the Blackmans and scores of other artists, writers and other creatives over many decades. Many of these artists, including the Blackmans, visited Whistlewood during these years. Such visits are now recorded in both Christabel’s book and Rodney James’ book on Alan McCulloch, Letters to a Critic.

Lyrically detailed, plant-filled landscapes by the Artists of Ampilatwatja relate the country on which their Dreaming stories sit. Talented Mimili Maku Arts newcomer Beverly Downs paints the trees of her lands in sweeps of brilliant colour, while Anita Pumani and Betty Mula’s glowing works bring to life the plants and dreaming stories of their Country with skilled assurance.

Utopia artists Carolyn Petrick Kngwarreye’s shimmering seed dreaming works mesmerise with layers of fine dots and Selena Teece Pwerle’s high-keyed canvases depict the rivers, landforms and red sands of her grandfather’s Country with the knowledge born of a lifetime’s observation.

This exhibition is open Friday to Sunday, from 11am – 4pm.

Drive. Take Peninsula link from Frankston until you reach the Dromana/Arthurs Seat exit (C789) then climb the famous route to the top of Arthurs Seat. This should take about 30 minutes from Frankston and will provide you with your first stop – a view from the top looking down at the glory of Port Phillip Bay and through to the Moorooduc Plains. From here follow Purves Road, then Browns Road through Main Ridge and Rosebud until you reach Springs Lane in Fingal. All up, this route should take approx. 30 minutes unless you stop and smell the roses along the way.

Do. Stop at Arthurs Seat State Park (Seawinds Gardens) to see kangaroos or The Cups Estate for a glass of wine or light snack before you book into the Peninsula Hot Springs for some relaxation.

Drive. From the Peninsula Hot Springs head back the same way and veer East back on Browns Road until you reach Boneo Road. Turn right here and head due south (follow the Flinders sign) All up, your comfortably about 30 minutes from Flinders.

Do. Stop at Cape Schanck Lighthouse (detour off Boneo Rd, 10 mins.), Bushrangers Bay or one of our favourites if your time poor and want just a little stretch – the Blowhole (just outside of Flinders). Once in Flinders pick up some organic bread at Flinders Sourdough, or if it’s lunch, take a seat on the deck at the Flinders Hotel for some local fare and hospitality. There’s lots to see and do in Flinders.

Drive. From Flinders head north east on Frankston-Flinders Road (C777) and by the time you reach Shoreham turn left onto Red Hill Road. Continue on this road until you reach Merricks North and Bittern Dromana Road (C788) where you will turn right. Follow this until you reach Balnarring Road (C784) where you will turn left and you will follow this road through to it’s completion – the Peninsula Link underpass. From here head back on to the link – your homebound. All up this route would take no more than 40 minutes but there are plenty of interesting places to see and do – weight up the time of day, season and your mood and go from there.

Do. If you’re looking for some inspiration in the garden then a stop at Nobbies View Plant Farm in Shoreham is a must. In Red Hill South there’s coffee time at The Cellar & Pantry (a local institution) Darling Park Winery (casual European fare), Polperro (sophisticated surrounds and menu) The Gordon Studio Glasslowers for exemplary glass works. Further along and in Merricks North you have Willow Creek Winery and to finish things off Terre at Dromana Estate (in Dromana), two of the finest experiences involving wine and food on the Peninsula.

Escape to the country is a half day trip allowing you the grace to experience some of the finest things on the Pen.

Drive. Take Peninsula link from Frankston until you reach the Dromana/Arthurs Seat exit (C789) then climb the famous route to the top of Arthurs Seat. This should take about 30 minutes from Frankston. Your first stop will be  Arthurs Seat. The view from the top most days is breathtaking and captures Port Phillip Bay and through to the Moorooduc Plains. From here follow Purves Road, then Browns Road through Main Ridge and Rosebud until you reach Boneo Road where you will turn left and you will follow this through to Flinders. All up, this route should take approx. 70 minutes.

Do. Stop at Arthurs Seat State Park (Seawinds Gardens) to see kangaroos and stretch your legs but from here on it’s about a 40 minute drive to Flinders. Along the way you will be  driving though beautiful country roads, picturesque and rugged coastal scenery, market gardens, see some beautiful homes and properties and farm-gates – road conditions vary but you will mainly encounter sealed single lane roads in each direction. Along the way you can stop at Bushrangers Bay, The Blowhole, Flinders Tomatoes to name a few but sit back, get comfortable and enjoy the open road. Once in Flinders pick up some organic bread at Flinders Sourdough, or if it’s lunch, take a seat on the deck at the Flinders Hotel for some local fare and hospitality.

Drive. From Flinders head north east on Frankston-Flinders Road (C777) and by the time you reach Shoreham turn left into Tucks Road. You will be driving on an unsealed roads here for at least 20 minutes – they are wide and well groomed most of the time. When you get to Shands Road, turn right and follow this through until you reach Shoreham Road. Turn left and continue to Red Hill South. Continue on this road until you reach Merricks North and Bittern Dromana Road (C788) where you will turn right. Follow this until you reach Balnarring Road (C784) where you will turn left and you will follow this road through to it’s completion – the Peninsula Link underpass. From here head back on to the link – your homebound. All up this route would take no more than 40 minutes but there are plenty of interesting places to see and do – weight up the time of day, season and your mood and go from there.
