Georgina Karavasil Papargiris and Vicki Karavasil lead the practice. They were both associates at some of Melbourne’s most influential architecture firms and have designed and delivered award winning projects at multiple scales.

Together, they have a diverse experience in an array of architectural typologies, including single-residential, multi-residential, commercial office, workplace design, hotels, hospitality, education & health. With this rounded knowledge, they have come together to establish their own practice.

Both directors have also taught at RMIT University, leading research-based design studios at the Masters of Architecture level and mentored major project students completing their final year of studies. Their association with academia over the years has had a large influence in their work.

Each of their projects are unique – they don’t replicate a signature style. The practice consciously takes a people-centric approach to design and is committed to crafting custom human environments. With a strong emphasis on design process, they take a rigorous procedural-based way of working in order to create projects which draw on layered influences and outcomes that are distinctive and meaningful. Every project is ground­ed in sol­id prin­ci­ples of function­al­i­ty, material exploration and envi­ron­men­tal sustainability to ensure the buildings are enjoyed long into the future.

Having a family holiday home in our region, Vicki & Georgina know the Mornington Peninsula well. The practice loves working in this amazing area, drawing on the diverse landscape and surrounding nature of this place.

The studio’s Red Hill Residence is a project in the peninsula which adopts from its natural setting. Expressing an interpretation of the modern country home through the interior, the house is composed with a layered use of natural materials, talking back to its local context with the integration of spotted gum timber, local Australian limestone and the addition of exposed concrete surfaces.

Within the living room, Australian limestone wraps the fireplace, paying homage to the local geology whilst creating a warm and comfortable living environment to unwind in front of the fire.

The bathrooms set a tranquil mood with the use of dark limestone surfaces, natural timber and embedded custom concrete troughs.

Natural light filters through carefully placed windows and skylights, illuminating the interior spaces and connecting them back into the surrounding landscape.

The considered approach, attention to detail and exploration of these biophilic / sensory elements give the designs a tactile and captivating quality.

They are always conscious of creating a holistic approach to the entire project; from the exterior architecture into the interiors. Concrete handles tie in with polished concrete floors and spotted gum timber dissolves from the façade to the heart of the home.

The gallery was established in 1971 and relocated to its present-day, purpose-built location in 1989, along the way becoming one of Australia’s leading regional galleries, showcasing traditional and contemporary art in all styles.  In that time they have acquired more than 1,600, predominantly Australian, artworks from the eighteenth century to the present day. For Senior Curator, Wendy Garden, the gallery offers an alternative space to consider what is going on in the world, through the social commentary offered and emotions elicited by the artworks, in a time when the mainstream media is narrowing expression.

In this way, MPRG see themselves as having an educative responsibility. Through the intangible and somewhat abstract quality of the space and its artworks, which will be perceived slightly differently by each person within the context of their own experience, they hope to offer new perspective. Also, they try to raise awareness and challenge patrons on social and environmental issues, citing art works depicting Devilbend Natural Features Reserve that brought the reserve to life in many people’s minds and gave them a sense of what was under threat. Wendy also talks about studies that have shown significant reductions in stress among high-level executives when they visited a gallery for a short period of time each day.

Major exhibitions can take up to two years to prepare, but it is a labour of love for the MPRG team, who all contribute ideas. Gallery Director, Jane Alexander, often selects themes based on a combination of intuition and her understanding of the community’s needs.

The feature exhibition for summer 2013/14 is ‘Sea of Dreams’ which delves into nearly 100 years of stories and history through a series of artistic representations of Port Philip Bay. Like all the exhibitions, Wendy has drawn great pleasure in putting it together, structuring displays so that the artworks talk to each other and become greater than the sum of their parts.

Drifting through ‘Sea of Dreams’ is a journey, witnessing the physical and cultural transformation of the landscape before your eyes, as well as being immersed in the human connection to water, with all its opportunities and anxieties.

All up the exhibition features 67 paintings, drawings, prints and video including big names like Fred McCubbin, Arthur Streeton, Arthur Boyd and Sidney Nolan, and some newly uncovered treats.

For such a major part of Peninsula, indeed Victorian, life, Jane was surprised to find no one had done such an exhibition before. As well as the exhibitions, MPRG hold discussions with artists and curators, panel discussions, coffee mornings and art workshops. They also run the biennial National Works on Paper, established in 1998 and now one of Australia’s most prestigious awards and acquisitive exhibitions, which supports contemporary Australian artists working with paper.

Through their ‘Message in a Bottle’ program they work with government schools to expose children to art and “explore notions of self, identity, place, community and environment in conjunction with creative explorations and activities.” ‘Young at Art’ is for 0-5 year olds, with storytelling, music, singing, dancing and other activities. It would all be impossible without the 140 or so dedicated and trained volunteers, who are involved in everything from administration to preparing works and acting as guides.

Entry to the gallery – which is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm – is only $4 for adults and $2 concession, yet membership ($30 adult, $25 concession, $50 family per year), or becoming a ‘Friend’, is still an enticing opportunity to experience and support the gallery. With access to deals and activities, it is also a great way to connect to its 3000-member strong community and celebrate the important role of art on the Peninsula.

From day one Eileen Gordon and Grant Donaldson wanted their studio to be somewhere people could look behind the scenes and gain a true appreciation of their art.  Nestled in the rolling hills of the Mornington Peninsula hinterland, the studio has every angle of the artistic process covered – from looking in on glassblowing in action, looking out at the inspiring countryside, and looking around at the gallery’s magnificent glassworks, all created onsite.  Each view is contrasting but tells a story.

Outside rests a calm, peaceful environment with rural views, landscaped to nurture creativity. Inspired by the lush, natural surroundings, Grant, who discovered his love of glassblowing through Eileen, sketches his ideas. Though it is a constant challenge to create new, original pieces, the couple confess that it is somewhat of an addiction, and a shared passion. Without the constant buzz of town, one can find themselves more easily reaching that almost-meditative state where creativity strikes most powerfully.

Finding the right setting to professionally practice their craft was incredibly important to Eileen and Grant. They spent ten years searching for that perfect spot to set up a glassblowing studio, before finally settling in Red Hill and opening Gordon Studio Glassblowers in 2003. Being close enough to Melbourne to source materials, providing sufficient tourism to sustain a business, and surrounded by the natural environment they craved, it offered the perfect mix.

They renovated the property’s old house with the specific objective of creating a secure viewing mezzanine that allowed visitors to watch the resident artists working with molten hot glass, shaping it, adding colour, blowing air and using gravity to create the pieces to be sold in the gallery. It is a distinct contrast to the peaceful views outside.  Glassblowing is a strenuous and challenging craft that requires physical and mental strength – just holding the equipment while blowing is physically demanding.  It is also now a rare trade, due to the cost involved. The techniques and tools – such as the glory hole, blowing iron, tongs, pincers and foot tool, which have changed little over time – all had to be sourced from England. Therefore, seeing glassblowing in action is a unique experience – as close a genuine tie to ancient history as you’re likely to find.

For Eileen and Grant, offering this insight is important, not merely as a point of interest, but to provide an appreciation for, and an understanding of, the art-form, and how much energy goes into creating each piece.

The peacefulness of the outdoors and the energy of the workshop come together through the homely, bright and open gallery, full of colourful and striking glassworks.  Pieces include vases, platters, various types of bottles, bowls, paperweights, and a range of decorative pieces. Many of the pieces have been created from the Gordon family who are very well-known glass engravers. They also create many custom designed pieces for customers, particularly to adorn new houses.

Throughout the year they also host events and demonstrations, including the opportunity for guests to create their own piece of glass art.  Between their work in the gallery and the blowing room, which are open to the public daily from 10am – 5pm, it is a time-consuming passion. They do, however, find time to rejuvenate, as is critically important for any artist. Eileen is a keen skier and squash player, and Grant pounds the skins as a drummer in a band. They have also travelled extensively, collecting glass artwork from across the world and hope to host an exhibition of their collection. That’s how much they enjoy glassblowing – even when they’re on holiday they’re chasing down pieces!
